The Challenges of
Hazardous Zone Inspections

Most hazardous-area inspections still rely on manual rounds and paper records. Together, they can leave gaps in asset coverage and in the condition data available to reliability and maintenance teams.
Operators face four recurring problems as a result.

PEOPLE SAFETY

Routine exposure to plant hazards

Manual rounds put people close to hazardous equipment and atmospheres. Site-specific PPE, gas detection and access procedures add coordination and time.

UNPLANNED DOWNTIME

Failures develop between checks

Specialist thermal and acoustic surveys may be infrequent. Leaks, overheating and mechanical degradation can develop between visits, increasing the risk of process losses and unplanned downtime.

KNOWLEDGE DRAIN

Field knowledge is harder to retain

Experienced operators retire while many teams become leaner or more centralized. Inconsistent records make it harder to preserve field knowledge and support remote reliability teams.

COMPLIANCE RISKS

Inspection records must stand up to review

Required rounds must be completed and documented. Fragmented checklists make it harder to demonstrate what was inspected, compare findings and follow up on issues.

Autonomous inspection in Ex-Zones.

ANYmal X brings autonomous inspection to hazardous process areas. Legged mobility extends coverage beyond the fixed-sensor grid, and our operations platform ANYbotics Shift™ turns each round into structured asset-condition data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers on inspection capability, hazardous-area use and deployment.

What is ANYmal X?
ANYmal X is ANYbotics' explosion-protected autonomous legged robot for industrial inspection. It is built for Ex-Zones in oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical sites, where explosive or hazardous gas may be present and ordinary electronics cannot be used. It carries a protected pan-tilt inspection payload and an optional gas-sensing module.
What does "explosion-protected" mean?
The robot is built so that it cannot ignite gas that may be present in its surroundings. Its electronics are sealed, monitored and designed so that sparks or hot surfaces cannot reach the surrounding atmosphere.
What can ANYmal X inspect?
Each round records how the equipment looks, sounds and reads, and what is in the air around it, as structured data per asset. The payload combines a zoom camera with visual change and object detection, 640 × 512 radiometric thermal imaging and an acoustic imager. An optional gas-sensing module adds gas measurements. Typical tasks: gas leak and presence detection; mechanical anomaly detection on rotating equipment; partial discharge detection in switchgear and substations; thermal analysis of flare lines, vessels and heat exchangers; visual detection of liquid leaks and HSE status; component misalignment and surface wear; equipment operational state verification; indicator, gauge and alarm monitoring.
Is ANYmal X certified for hazardous areas?
Yes. Bureau Veritas, an independent notified body, has examined the design and issued an ATEX EU-type examination certificate for Zones 1 and 2. This is the core technical approval of the explosion protection. IECEx certification will be available with first production.
Why is there no IECEx certificate yet?
Nothing is missing in the design. The IECEx certificate requires an audit of the series production line, which starts after launch. IECEx certification will be available with first production.
What are the limits of use?
ANYmal X is certified for gas atmospheres in Zone 1 and Zone 2, Gas Group IIB, temperature class T4 (EPL Gb, Category 2G). It is not intended for Zone 0, explosive dust atmospheres or IIC gases such as hydrogen and acetylene. Charging and nitrogen refilling take place outside the hazardous area.
In which conditions can ANYmal X operate?
Continuous operating ambient temperature −10 to 50 °C; humidity 5–95%, non-condensing; light rain (< 4 mm/h) and moderate rain (< 16 mm/h); altitude 0–2,000 m above sea level. Ingress protection is IP65 for the robot and IP67 for the inspection payload. Preliminary specifications, subject to change. Refer to the product certificate and user manual for approved ratings and operating conditions.
Where is the robot charged, and what infrastructure does the site need?
Outside the hazardous area, using the ANYbotics charging system only. The robot walks to its dock on its own and returns to the plant to continue its rounds. The dock is floor-mounted in a sheltered, non-hazardous area and needs about 1 × 2 m, or about 2 × 2 m with the nitrogen refill station. Nitrogen supply purity is at least 99.9%, with at most 0.1% oxygen. Keep a 2 m radius around the charging robot free of flammable material.
How long does the battery last on one charge?
More than 3 hours.
How autonomous is it, and does it need a network connection?
Navigation, path planning, motion control and diagnostics run on the robot. It docks on its own and resumes its mission after charging. Stored missions continue offline, with data buffered on board and synchronized with Shift when connectivity returns. It supports Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 and 5 GHz) and 5G / 4G LTE; remote assistance requires connectivity.
